Creating a bedroom with a masculine feel
Clean, modern, yet comfortable, a bedroom designed with a masculine touch can be just as inviting as the most indulgent of feminine designs. Yet just as too many frilly, fluffy details can be overwhelming to the senses, a design that amps up the testosterone too much can also be overwhelming. Balance is key.
As with any bedroom’s décor, the color scheme, furniture and accessories should always be chosen with a mind to the occupant’s personal likes and dislikes. It should reflect their personality.
Start by studying the size, lines and angles of your bedroom space; take measurements. You should have a clear picture of the room’s dimensions in your head before you start shopping.
For your color scheme, make a bold statement by painting the walls a basic, bold, rich color like red, purple, blue or green — or for a more subtle feel, choose a neutral shade like white, tan or beige. If you have a smaller bedroom, you can open up the space by choosing a lighter color — or if the room is cavernously large, you can give it a more intimate feel with a darker shade.
For bedding and window treatments, choose a lighter or darker shade of the same color, or a complimentary shade — blue walls, for instance, go well with pretty much any shade of green, brown or black. If you want to use patterned linens or draperies, keep it simple with stripes and plaids, or a rich tapestry of you’re going for a more elegant look. Pairing stripes and plaids can also be a bold touch, but remember to use patterns with shades that compliment each other. Draperies are a good place to experiment with bolder colors if your basic color scheme is on the neutral end of the spectrum.
Furniture should be selected with an eye toward clean lines and simple designs, for a sleek, modern feel. Matching lamps and light fixtures are always a good choice, but you could also go for a contrasting effect.
To accessorize your décor, choose a few throw pillows and rugs for a fun splash of color. Leather, suede or animal prints can add a subtly masculine effect.
Artwork should consist of things the room’s occupant will genuinely enjoy looking at, whether it be paintings, framed posters, or a full length mirror. Again, this is where your personality comes into play. Be creative, but don’t go overboard.
